Cardiac Arrest in the Modern Age: Ancient Solutions from Yoga and Ayurveda

Lately, there has been a noticeable rise in cases of cardiac arrest; especially among celebrities, which brings the issue into the spotlight.

What is striking is that many of these individuals reportedly follow a healthy lifestyle, maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and avoid junk or processed food. Yet, they still suffer from heart-related conditions.

This leads us to a deeper reflection: Is healthy food and exercise enough????

Many believe they are living a sattvic (pure and disciplined) lifestyle, and thus assume they are immune to disease, particularly something as serious as a heart attack.

But sattvic living, as understood in Yoga and Ayurveda, is much more than physical discipline. It offers a holistic approach to well-being that integrates not just diet and exercise, but also daily habits and mental patterns or mental conditions.

According to Ayurveda, Aahara (diet), Vihaara (lifestyle), and Vichaara (thoughts) are the three core pillars of health:

Aahara : Aahara includes not only the food we eat, but everything we consume through our senses, water, air, sounds, visuals, and even the quality of our thoughts.

Vihaara: Vihaara encompasses our daily routine, rest, sleep, seasonal alignment, physical activity, and social interactions.

Vichaara: Vichaara refers to the state of our mind, our beliefs, emotions, reactions, and attitudes, which deeply influence both body and mind.

The problem is, most people overemphasise diet and neglect the other two pillars. As a result, an invisible imbalance sets in one that healthy food alone cannot correct.

From my perspective, stress is not the only cause of modern health issues; it’s a warning sign, indicating a deeper disharmony in thought and lifestyle.

Unless we address the root causes, including how we live and think a true health will remain incomplete.
